Sports Arenas
7th Mar. 2002
Hardly a day goes by that I don’t read about some new sports arena or facility being built in my home province. Prince Edward Island and many parts of Canada are obsessed with building sports facilities, usually at the expense of anything related to the humanities. I seldom read about city or provincial governments wanting to build more museums, libraries or even parks. But by God you must invest millions in a new hockey rink or swimming center. If you look at this phenomenon as an outsider, which I think I have become, you might have the misconception that many Islanders (and Canadians in general) are extremely interested in their physical well being. I mean with all these sports facilities everyone must be extremely physically active. But that is not the case. Canadians are overweight. So why the investment when so few use, why not try to invest resources in areas that might allow for greater participation by the greater public. How about building more parks, libraries, and museums.
